The Torbay pro-active unit is appealing for information about the shotgun which was seized along with other items last week when officers executed a warrant under the Theft Act warrant at an address in Wellswood.

DC Simon Sherwood from the unit said it was good to have recovered the item as it was thought to be stolen and also taken a possible weapon off the street.

"We are very interested to hear from anyone who recognises this shotgun which has some very distinctive features.

"It is possible it has been stolen from a shed or garage as it shows signs of weathering.

"Because of its age it would not naturally have a serial number but it is going to be forensically tested and until that happens we will not know if it is registered or not."

When the gun is sent off for forensics. It will be analysed for fingerprints and DNA.

The shotgun was found in a brown canvas case which has the initials G.C. on the clasp.

The letter W has been carved on both sides of the wooden butt.

The name 'Linda' has also been carved into the wood by the firing hammers.

Some shotgun cartridges were also recovered from the same address.

DC Sherwood said it was possible the owner of the shotgun may not have realised it had been stolen or may not have reported it's theft.

But he said anyone could contact him with confidential information.

"We would be grateful to hear from anyone who knows anything at all about it. Anyone with information can call me, in confidence."

A man and a woman were arrested in relation to handling stolen goods and possession of a firearm. The pair have been bailed. Police inquiries continue.

DC Sherwood can be contacted on 01803 841614.
