IT MAY ULTIMATELY have ended in play-off disappointment, but Torquay United's 2011-2012 season will still go down as one of the most remarkable in the club's history.

Despite defeat to Stevenage in the 2011 final at Old Trafford, the Gulls were not expected to match that effort in many circles.

For new manager Martin Ling inherited a squad weakened by departures in the wake of former boss Paul Buckle's move to Westcountry rivals Bristol Rovers.

Ling, who was not on the original 'shortlist' for Buckle's successor, had to make a series of quickfire signings in the time available before the big kick-off.
