Among its features are under-floor heating, electric windows (which close automatically when it rains), TV, DVD and wireless internet.

Former Teignbridge council leader Alan Connett said he "never ceased to be amazed" how much people would pay for something so small.

"I am surprised because in the current climate there is not a lot of money about and the people who have it are not splashing it around," he added.

"It rather shows that the economy is picking up and will appeal to people with the sort of money to buy a posh beach hut."

The property is being marketed by Fulfords estate agents in Shaldon, who say it can sleep up to four people.

The branch described the property as a luxury, one-bed apartment in an "enviable" position and boasting its own "dinghy park". The beach huts became a part of the Shaldon street scene after the plans were approved by planners in May 2010.

They replaced the vacant Brigantine boat chandlery – the 1960s-style flat-roofed building next door to the Clipper café which stood empty for a year. Attempts were made by the council to block the timber and metal development as the bohemian style was thought to be out of character with a prime location.

But the Shaldon Quay Company eventually won consent. Director and developer Bernard Howard has said the beach hut exterior hides a deceptively spacious interior, like the Tardis in BBC's classic sci-fi series Dr Who.

"The position is exceptional – at high tide you can practically dip your toes into the sea," he said on their completion. The wood huts can be used for overnight stays and can be rented out to holidaymakers for £90 per night.
