Archers battle it out at Churston Ferrers

ARCHERS who've shot for England and Great Britain were among the 50 to take part in the Autumn Indoor FITA 18 UK Record Status Archery Tournament hosted by Brixham Archers at Churston Ferrers Grammar School.

The competition was in two parts, starting with FITA 18 qualification rounds in which five dozen arrows were aimed at a 40cm target face from 18 metres.

And it was followed by a series of head-to-head knock-out rounds when the top eight or 16 in each of the Recurve Bow, Compound Bow and Longbow categories shot 12 arrows each to determine the final places.

Clubs were represented from across Devon and Cornwall and as far afield as South Gloucestershire and Oxfordshire, so it spoke volumes for local archers that several from Torbay clubs were involved in shoot-offs in the head-to-heads.

In the Gents' Recurve, in particular, Gary Wilde (Paignton Archers) took second place after making it through the quarter and semi-finals, only to miss out on first place by two points.

Glen Wilde, also from the Paignton club, took third place.

Dan Tooze (Brixham Archers) was another to lose out by just two points (116-114) in the Compound Bow category. At the end of a dramatic gold final, Brixham's top compound archer lost out to Adam Shaw from Cleve Archers.

Steve Squires was another member of the host club to compete in a final, in his case a winning one when he topped the Gents' Longbow category, while Barnstaple's England international Estelle Edwick won the Ladies' Recurve.

Brixham Archers have enjoyed a steady increase in membership since April following a successful season of beginners' courses led by qualified Archery GB coaches.

Also, they've recently formed a junior club for those over the age of 10, with two of their newest members, junior Will Wetherall and senior Bob Cunningham, competing against other clubs for the first time in last weekend's tournament.

Indeed, Cunningham celebrated with a score of 501 in his qualifying round.
