More Atherley dejection for Devon's ladies

Wednesday, November 12, 2008, 09:30

DAWLISH'S county official Betty Springham described it as a 'really sad day' after watching Devon ladies lose to Dorset 140-95 (5-1 in rinks) for the second year running in the first round of the English Women's Indoor Bowling Association inter-county Atherley Trophy.

Twelve months after going down 128-98 (5-1 in rinks), Devon suffered an even heavier defeat this time, finishing 45 shots adrift of their rivals.

It is nearly three years since Devon last won a match in the Atherley Trophy.

But all credit to skip Aileen Hodsoll (Isca) and her rink of Rosemary Hirons (Honiton), Terri Kennard and England star Barbara Bellamy from Torquay United for being the only winners for Devon (26-16).

"So many of the players were still not finding line and length towards the end of the match but Aileen's rink sussed it and they all played well against a Dorset rink that had been chosen to play the extra end," said Betty. "Overall it was a great disappointment."

Having lost to Dorset last year winning on just one rink, it was déjà vu for Devon. "At least we're consistent," sighed Betty.

l IN the EIBA mixed pairs, Barbara Bellamy and her husband Geoff were beaten by Sandra Basnett and Roy Johnson (Torbay) 19-15 at Torquay United.
