Buckle won't be rushed

Saturday, July 04, 2009, 07:00

PAUL BUCKLE insists that he will not be hurried into the transfer market, just to keep up with Torquay United's new League Two rivals.

With his players due back for pre-season training on Monday, the Gulls' boss is keeping his transfer 'powder' dry, stressing: "I've got a good squad, and I'm not going to use up my budget just to sign players who are no better than the ones who are already here."

Buckle is well aware that he is one of only three managers in the division who have not made any close-season signings so far.

AFC Bournemouth's Eddie Howe and Barnet's Ian Hendon are the others, although the Bees are hoping to sign young ex-Swindon striker Jake Hyde next week.

Many of the division's managers have had to be busy, because they had so few contracted players to start with.

One of them, new Darlington boss Colin Todd, has had to rebuild his squad virtually from scratch.

Ex-Torquay striker Lee Thorpe, from Rochdale, is one of his latest recruits.

But Buckle has 18 players, including still-negotiating young defender Chris Robertson, on his books.

"There may be plenty of players out there, but they don't all have the quality we're looking for," he said.

"I've got a squad of players here who played last season for the right to fight for a place in League Two.

"Anybody I bring in now must, hopefully, be able to come straight in and take us further.

"Anything less than that is not fair on the players already here."

Also, the season starts on August 8, still five weeks away.

Nevertheless, Buckle does have a shortlist of transfer targets, at least two of whom are ongoing inquiries.

"They are taking a while to develop, but I look on that as a good sign," he said.

Meanwhile, Robertson's future should become clearer next week.

His presence, or the lack of it, at training on Monday will be indicative.

There is no firm news yet on a replacement for physio Damien Davey.

Davey, whose second spell at the club had lasted for two years, and United parted company at the end of last season after they could not agree terms for him to stay.

""We have put cover in place for the players' return for training," said Buckle.

"We're working on a couple of possibilities, and we hope to make an announcement about a new physio soon."

Elsewhere, Shrewsbury — they lost skipper Ben Davies to busy Notts County this week — have signed young goalkeeper Chris Neal from Preston.

Hereford, whose manager John Trewick has made six signings in recent weeks, have had the Blackfriars End of their Edgar Street ground closed after a health and safety inspection.

It means the Bulls will have to operate on a reduced capacity next season, and make new arrangements for accommodating away fans.

Torquay's former Conference opponents Farsley Celtic are appealing against the decision to expel them from the Blue Square North, for going into administration.

Boston and Halifax have suffered similar fates in recent seasons.

And next season's Blue Square Premier fixture list has thrown up a tasty first-day affair — promoted AFC Wimbledon against relegated Luton Town.
