Gillespie in World XI to face Devon

Wednesday, July 29, 2009, 09:51

LASHINGS have been forced to find a replacement for ex-Test star Ian Harvey as swine flu has ruled him out of today's game against Devon at Budleigh Salterton (2.30pm).

When you call yourselves the World XI, as Lashings do, you can't drag someone out of a nearby pub to make up the numbers.

Lashings skipper Chris Harris, a veteran of 250 one-day internationals for New Zealand, has roped ex-Australia bowler Jason Gillespie in to complete his squad, joining fellow Aussie Greg Blewitt.

Among the other well-known faces of the not-so-distant past named in the Lashings squad are former Pakistani pace bowler Mohammad Akram, West Indian batsman Gordon Greenidge, Surrey and Pakistan spinner Saqlain Mushtaq and Indian batsman Wasim Jaffer.

Faced with such an array of talent, Devon have picked a strong side rather than throw in the youngsters, which they have done in the past for games against Kenya and Holland.

There are one or two unavailabilities – skipper Bob Dawson among them – but nine of the 11 who played in the Minor Counties game against Wales at Exmouth yesterday are in the 12.

In come all-rounder Gary Chappell and Sidmouth captain Will Murray.

Lashings are on a two-game tour of the Westcountry. Their second game is at Instow on Thursday where they play North Devon CC (11am). Stuart Law, the former Australia and Essex batsman, comes in for Harvey in that match.
