Poor entry but Darts cash in

Wednesday, July 30, 2008, 07:00

CONDITIONS on the river Torridge were perfect for the Appledore and Instow Regatta, the fifth regatta in the West of England ARA Championship series.

Entries for this regatta were poor in relation to the previous four championship regattas which had shown an increase on last year.

As a result there were just 21 races many of which were either a row over or had two or three crews racing over the 1100 metre course.

Dartmouth made full advantage of the situation with their large entry and came away with seven trophies and for the second successive week the Championship of the Day. Dart Totnes with a reduced squad picked up two trophies as did Paignton.

Both Dartmouth and Bideford Blues had entered crews for the Men's Veteran coxed fours but because of personnel changes the crews were switched to row in the main Championship event, the Men's Senior A coxed fours. Bideford Blues ran out winners by two thirds of a length from Dartmouth's Matthew Isaac, John Hart, Phil Langman, Terry Wallis and cox, Louise Bellamy, but no Championship points were awarded.

At Men's Senior B coxed fours with the unbeaten Championship leaders Exeter and contenders Exmouth absent Dartmouth's Matthew Isaac, John Hart, Phil Langman, Terry Wallis and cox, Louise Bellamy, were winners by a length from Bideford Reds with Bideford Blues a distance behind in third place. The win moves Dartmouth into second in the Championship with the prospect of a South Coast Championship place.

Paignton's Elliot Barton, Robbie Tucker, Simon Henshaw, Paul Henshaw and cox, Charlotte Lane, tightened their grip on the Men's Senior C coxed fours Championship with a two length win over Bideford Blues with Dartmouth's Chris China, Jack Kirby, Liam Boyd, David Langmead and cox, Ali McGrigor, a further length behind in third place. Paignton have now opened a fifteen point gap over second placed Exmouth.

In the Men's Novice coxed fours Dartmouth's Michael Tilley, Jack Kirby, Richie Jeffs, TJ Lang and cox, Marie Dayment, were three quarters of a length winners from Bideford Reds and at Men's Under 18 coxed fours Dartmouth's Chris China, Liam Boyd, TJ Lang, David Langmead and cox, Marie Dayment, were three length winners from Bideford Reds.

Dartmouth's Michael Tilley, Richie Jeffs, TJ Lang, Matt Dayment and cox, Marie Dayment, increased their Championship lead in the Men's Under 16 coxed quadruple sculls with an emphatic three length win over Bideford Reds A with Bideford Reds B a further two lengths down in third place. Dartmouth now lead the Championship by ten points.

In the Ladies Championship coxed fours there were no races at Senior A and Senior B and Bideford Reds A beat Bideford Blues by a distance at Senior C with Bideford Reds B a further distance behind in third place. At Novice Exeter B beat Bideford Reds by a distance with Exeter A two lengths behind in third place. Exeter also won the Under 18 by two lengths from the Dart Totnes crew of Christie Rhys Brown, Jacqui Gibbard, Devon Cleal, Rose Willoughby and cox, Steve Grimes, with Dartmouth's Hanna China, Chrissie Rugg, Sam Tilley, Fiona Dayment and cox, Louise Bellamy, just a canvass behind in third place.

The Ladies Championship coxed quadruple sculls saw the Dart Totnes crew of Christie Rhys Brown, Jacqui Gibbard, Devon Cleal, Emily Murphy and cox, Chelsie Cleal, win the Under 16 by two lengths from Exeter with Bideford Reds just a quarter length adrift in third place. Bideford Blues sculled over in the Under 14 when Bideford Reds were disqualified for being late at the start.

In the Championship single sculls there were wins for Elliot Barton of Paignton at Men's senior C; Bright of Bideford Blues at Men's Novice; Dartmouth's Chris China at Men's Under 18; Povey of Bideford Reds at Men's Under 16; Sam Tilley of Dartmouth at Ladies Under 18; and Exeter at Ladies Under 16. Barton, China and Tilley all lead their respective Championships.

In the four supporting events Dartmouth picked up two trophies with a win at Men's Under 16 double sculls with TJ Lang and Matt Dayment and Hanna China and Fiona Dayment sculled over at Ladies Novice double sculls.
