Teigns starting to show strain

TEIGNMOUTH Ladies' fixture backlog is catching up with them.

Well up with the Premier Two promotion group in the first half of the season, their form has suffered through a series of postponements and the demands of trying to keep league and cup hopes alive.

They lost 2-0 away to Chippenham on Saturday, beaten by the Wiltshire side's sharper finishing.

Teignmouth were unlucky not to take the lead in the first half.

Captain Kate Rochelle's goalbound shot from a short corner was cleared by a defender's stick in mid-air, with the goalie beaten.

With the Rachel Thorne and Lizzy Nicholls dangerous down the left, Teignmouth always looks capable of scoring.

Newcomer Rachel Simmonds nearly marked her debut with a goal, having one touch from Jackie Brooks' drive brilliantly saved and then firing wide after rounding the 'keeper.

Chippenham had few decent chances, but when one came along they took it, forcing the ball under goalkeeper Hazel Tranchant's dive.

Midway through the second half Chippenham scored a second with a well-executed short corner move.

Teignmouth did not give in.

The home goalie made another top-class save from Hannah Taylor, after Thorne supplied the pass.

Amy Jones, Kate Rochelle and Nicholls, voted player of the match, all worked hard to the end.

There's no let-up this weekend — a double-header of Bude in the league on Saturday and ECV Hornets in the Devon Cup semi-final on Sunday, both at home.
