Vicary mulls a defeat in last-chance saloon

DARTMOUTH Reserves player-boss Dave Vicary believes his 'last chance' to win some silverware with the team may have gone after his side missed out on a place in the Dartmouth Cup final – going down to an extra-time defeat at Staverton & Landscove.

"That's three semi-finals I've lost over the past 12 months – last season we went out at the same stage in this competition and in the Devon Senior Cup," said Vicary.

"Getting to the final of the Dartmouth Cup this season may have been my last chance to win a cup, both as a player and a manager of this team, because if we make the most of our games in hand and get promoted, I don't think I'm the right man to manage us in the Premier Division.

"Of course I'd still like to take the team into the Premier, but it would probably need someone with more experience and contacts to take over."

Challenging for promotion is all that Vicary's boys have got left to aim for after Mike Summers hit a hat-trick as Staverton eventually won 4-1 over the 120 minutes.

In normal time, Summers scored his first after just five minutes to hand the hosts the lead, and the tie could have been sewn up by the interval, but Staverton failed to make the most of their dominance.

It was a different story after the break, however, as Dartmouth equalised in the 50th minute through Les Prestage and then piled the pressure on the home goal as they searched for a winner – but it didn't come and so the match went to extra-time.

Summers then restored Staverton's one-goal advantage early into the added 30 minutes of play, and the home side were given another boost moments later when the visitors were reduced to ten men, with Kelvin Hill receiving his marching orders for a second bookable offence.

The hosts exploited the extra space, with Summers grabbing his third, before Luke Brown sealed the victory to take Mark Morris' charges through to the final.

Their opponents have yet to be decided after Abbotskerswell's last-four clash with fellow Division One title-chasers Brixham Villa Reserves fell foul of the weather for the second week running.

Morris – whose side face the mouth-watering prospect of making two finals this term if they can overcome Totnes & Dartington Reserves in the Herald Cup – said: "I'm not worried about who we face, bring on either of them, we can beat anyone on our day."

In the other divisional cup semi-finals to go ahead, Dartmouth 3rds had more luck than the club's reserve side – hammering Ilsington Villa 6-0 to claim their place in May's Ronald Cup showpiece, where they'll take on Foxhole United or Bovey Tracey Reserves.

All the goals were scored during the opening 40 minutes of the tie, with Chick Havelin bagging a treble and Richard Yeo, Daniel Griffiths and Jordan Havelin adding one apiece.

Harbertonford earned the right to face Teign Village in the Lidstone Cup final after they beat Chudleigh Athletic 3-2.

Aaron Palfrey, Matt Attree and substitute Zeb Peters – who manages the reserves in Division Five but was able to play due to their game against Marldon being called off – were on target for Fords. Lee French, from the penalty spot, and Matthew Pate replied.

● DIVISION Two pacesetters Buckland Athletic Reserves are one match away from the Devon Senior Cup final after they cruised to a 4-1 win over Devon & Exeter League opponents Phoenix Club.

Buckland took an early lead through Chris Bennett – who cut in from the right and went past three defenders before slotting home – and after 20 minutes, an own goal made it 2-0.

That's how it remained until the 72nd minute when John Coote nodded in from a Matt Briant corner to put the Bucks further in control, and, not long after, it was four courtesy of an individual effort from Ben Cowling.

Lee Moxey – brother of Exeter City winger Dean – pulled one back with a stunning 40-yarder, but it was mere consolation for Phoenix.
