Zeb feels he's returned to a better squad

CHRIS ZEBROSKI says that the Torquay United squad he's just rejoined is better than the one he left 18 months ago.

And the crowd-pleasing ex-Swindon, Plymouth, Millwall and Wycombe forward insists he had no doubts about returning for a second spell at Plainmoor.

"I'm impressed with this team — it looks stronger than when I was here before," said Zebroski, who has signed on loan from Wycombe Wanderers ahead of a planned permanent transfer in January.

"This squad has lads who are a lot better on the ball.

"We're definitely good enough to push on in this league.

"It says something when it felt like we had lost the game at Port Vale the other night, even though we drew (2-2).

"Once we get that winning mentality week in and week out, we should move up the table."

Football has an old adage about never going back, but for Zebroski, 23, that was never an issue.

Even though Wycombe won promotion from League Two to League One last season, 'Zebs' said: "I still think Torquay can be a big club at this level.

"I know the manager and the players and the area here, and I'm not too far from my family in Swindon.

"I probably had the best season of my career at Torquay a couple of years ago.

"It's an environment I'm used to.

"I wasn't playing enough at Wycombe, and I need to be playing regularly to try and progress my career."

After Zebroski scored 19 goals in United's first 2007-2008 season in the Conference, Millwall recalled him to accept a £20,000 offer from Wycombe.

Although he played a significant role in the Wanderers' promotion under Peter Taylor, he's been in and out of the side this season, under Taylor and new Adams Park boss Gary Waddock.

Zebroski is convinced that he can stage a repeat of his successful first spell at Plainmoor.

And he has his eyes on a possible striking role to do it.

"I think striking is my best position, but I played left wing here the last time and I don't mind playing there," he said.

"I'll just be patient and do my best."

Although Zebroski knew several of his old United teammates from two years ago, he has also linked up again with the club's newest signing.

Spurs starlet Adam Smith had a month on loan at Wycombe earlier this season.

Zebroski said: "I'm not surprised that Adam has started well here — he looked a good player at Wycombe, and it's good to play in front of him again."
