A record hat-trick at Boston

Tuesday, September 30, 2008, 09:46

THE indomitable Torquay duo of Ian Wilson and Maurice Dunn have completed a remarkable hat-trick of records over the UK's most gruelling course.

The Boston Rowing Marathon is an annual head-of-the-river race run over a 31-mile course on the River Witham between Lincoln and Boston.

Wilson, 58, and Dunn, 49, finished 45th overall out of the 203 finishers which included eights, fours pairs, quadruples, double sculls and single sculls.

They were the second coxless pair to finish and set a new record of 4-05-48 in the men's veteran B coxless pairs category.

The race was won by a composite Senior One eight in a time of 3-12-07.

In 2006 the pair set a record for men's veteran D coxless pairs of 4-09-20 and in 2007 set a record for men's veteran C coxless pairs of 4-07-04.

And with their latest time, they now hold three course records.

However, Wilson said: "Despite the near perfect conditions we still failed to break the four-hour barrier and I guess our age is now against that happening."

Having finished the race for the third time, the intrepid coxless pair are looking for more records over the marathon course and expect to double scull next year and go for the men's veteran E coxless pairs record, which currently stands at 4-24-52.

Also completing the 31-mile challenge were Graham Terrill and Alan Bright of Dart Totnes.

Terrill finished 193rd overall in 5-44-15 and Bright finished 197th overall in 6-04-11. Terrill was third in the men's veteran G single sculls category and Bright was fourth in the men's veteran E single sculls category.

SHAUN BARKER and Gary Cairns, both Police Community Service Officers with the Devon & Cornwall Constabulary and both members of Dart Totnes Rowing Club, made the trip to Durham for the British Police Rowing Championships.

The course of 650 metres attracted crews from all over the country representing each Police Force Area including the Metropolitan Police, Avon & Somerset, Central Scotland, Durham, Strathclyde and Northern Ireland to name just a few.

Shaun Barker, who started as an Under 16 sweep oar rower at the Dartmouth club and went on to row the Atlantic in 2004 as a member of the Dartmouth Atlantic four has returned to the sport. He won the novice sculls, beating Strathclyde in the semi-final and then Avon & Somerset in the Final.

Gary Cairns was third in the Open single sculls beaten by The Met and Central Scotland.

Shaun jumped into a Men's Veteran coxed four crew for the Met and came second beaten by Durham. The same crew also came second in the Men's Open coxed fours beaten by Avon & Somerset.

Gary and Shaun combined to take second place in the Open double sculls being beaten by Central Scotland. The pair also joined a mixed eight for the Met and won beating Strathclyde in the final.

Shaun added: "Not a bad day really! We're looking to bring the Championships to Totnes next year!"
