Five slammed past promotion rivals

Tuesday, February 09, 2010, 09:52

"THE BEST performance our team has given for several seasons" was Torbay Ladies captain Abby Hales' verdict on the 5-1 rout of Trelawney Division One promotion rivals Truro.

The result leaves Torbay (2nd) just a point behind leaders Mannamead and pushed third-placed Truro three points adrift.

They led Truro 3-0 at half-time at Shiphay.

Marilyn Jordan opened the scoring, following up after Lisa Pengilley's first shot came back off the post.

A brilliant move between Kate Hine and Catherine Miller saw Miller score the second, and Hine added the third herself just before half-time.

Truro pulled a goal back and exerted their first real pressure of the match early in the second half.

But when Pengilley finished off a short corner move to make it 4-1, the contest was over.

The fifth goal, also by Pengilley, was the icing on the cake.

Hales was voted player of the match, but she said: "It could have been any of us. We were all fired up."

Hine, Pengilley, Jordan, Lucy Jones and Becky Davidson were all on top form, Miller and Toni Keech worked tirelessly and Fran Crispin was her usual cool self in defence.

Torbay are away to Plymouth University next, but the home game against Mannamead on March 6 is looming as a possible title decider.
