RESIDENTS are being urged to have their say on a proposed housing development on the outskirts of Paignton.

Exeter-based Taylor Whimpey has filed a planning application to build 197 houses on land at Collaton St Mary.

Opponents in the area off Totnes Road believe the new housing scheme will lead to a massive surge in traffic on the A385, would be on land likely to flood and would destroy the beautiful landscape.

But the developers believe the scheme will provide much-needed affordable homes in the Bay as well as jobs.

Carol Hill, committee member of the Collaton St Mary Residents' Group, said: "We are told we have a say in the future of our area — well, let us say what we feel and stop this in our beautiful countryside.

"This area should be charted as an area of outstanding natural beauty."

She claimed: "For many young people the hopes of being housed in one of the new houses they wish to build on the A385 Totnes Road is just a pipe dream. With wages in this area being as low as they are, it will take many years to save the deposit for such homes."

Mrs Hill added: "It is our democratic right to have our say on this and we would urge everyone to think about the future for their families and the supply of food that these fields produce for them, and the impact it has on the environment."A spokesperson for Taylor Wimpey Exeter said: "Our recent questions and answers session was well received by the 60 people who attended the exhibition and gave us further insight into the viewpoints of the local community.

"We are working with the relevant parties and key stakeholders to address the queries raised, which included what we're proposing to build and interest in job creation.

"We are committed to delivering a selection of much-needed quality new, yet affordable, homes to satisfy demand in Collaton St Mary and will also be making other beneficial community contributions towards the local area. Our application is now with the council and we await its decision in due course."

The planning application is expected to be discussed at a meeting at Oldway Mansion in Paignton on December 10.

    “Completely agree with you Kerswelpalm.
How long until Paignton joins onto Totnes then Totnes to Ivybridge then Ivybridge to Plymouth.?
It is a hard fact that the bay is surrounded by water and we cannot meet these ridiculous housing targets without spoiling our beautiful countryside for ever.”

“You cannot keep building. Look at the problems building houses is having on the drainage systems. They can't cope and what will happen is more run off will end up in the sewers and it will flood further down in Clennon Valley. Why do we need more homes here anyway, no one can get mortgages or afford to buy them, if anything, it should be social housing for those that can't afford it. The other thing it will cause is more traffic, with such a rubbish road system around Paignton. The town centre is shabby and there are little facilities, so why would anyone want to move to Paignton. Personally, I don't live in Collaton St Mary, but I can see the issues this will raise. It is a separate village, but is fast becoming a suburb of Paignton.”
