An historic market town, visited by Oliver Cromwell during the English Civil War, has been named the best place to live in the Westcountry.

Wadebridge in North Cornwall topped the Sunday Times Best Places to Live in the South West with Topsham, near Exeter, and Totnes, placed second and third respectively.

Councillor Tony Rush, Mayor of Wadebridge, said: "Wadebridge is an old market town steeped in history. But nowadays it's easy to access with the new bypass. There are plenty of side streets for visitors to explore. And if you want to buy something, you're virtually guaranteed to find it in one of the 90 independent stores."

Exeter city councillor for Topsham Rob Newby said: "In Topsham there's a lot going on in what is just a little town. There's historical aspects, wonderful buildings, thriving communities, museums, markets, independent shops... it's got everything you would want."

“I wonder where Plymouth comes on that list? Probably a long way down.”
